While marriage can be wonderful, it can also be problematic.  For many, marriage unites the souls.  Unfortunately, for just as many, marriage brings out the worst of both souls.

Michigan divorce statistics shed light on the realty of marriage and divorce.  In 2012, fifty six thousand three hundred and fifteen couples (56,315) got married and thirty two thousand eight hundred and eight (32,808) couples divorced.  Unfortunately, divorce is a statistical realty.

A prenuptial agreement can help you limit the financial cost and emotional stress of a divorce.

I am a big fan of a prenuptial agreement.  A prenuptial agreement is a contract entered into prior to marriage which sets forth how property, debts and support will be addressed in case of divorce.  A prenuptial agreement can protect you from the statistical realty of marriage ending in divorce by avoiding the financial and emotional costs associated with the divorce process.

In drafting a prenuptial agreement, the parties negotiate the terms of a divorce with the assistance of counsel while you love each other, rather than after the marriage is on the rocks.  More importantly, a prenuptial agreement can save couples thousands of dollars in the event a marriage ends in divorce.
