No one plans on getting sick or hurt but it happens and kids are more likely to get sick or hurt than adults. Frequent contacts at school, playgrounds coupled with an immature immune system can create a perfect storm. Health care for kids is a necessity and not an option.
The Michigan Child Support Formula Manual recognizes the necessity to provide healthcare for minor children. Section 3.05(B) of the Michigan Child Support Formula Manual provides that the court must order one or both parents to maintain health care for kids if it is available at a reasonable cost as a benefit of employment, or when a self-employed parent maintains personal health care coverage.
Reasonable cost of health care for kids is defined in section 3.05(A) of the Michigan Child Support Formula Manual. The cost of health care for kids is considered “reasonable” provided the coverage does not exceed 5 percent of the providing parent’s gross income. A parent’s cost of health care for kids is considered unreasonable if the total obligation for child support and health care coverage exceeds 50 percent of the parent’s income.
