COVID-19: THE CONCERNING SURGE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The global pandemic that is COVID-19 has created unprecedented chaos and uncertainty in a country known for its strength and resolve. Unfortunately, the toll this virus has taken on our society isn’t just an overrun healthcare system or a depressed economy. It has also been responsible for a concerning increase in domestic violence as well as a depletion of resources available to those in need.

This alarming uptick in domestic violence has been reported by news stations and outlets the world over and reached a fever pitch this week when the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres spoke at length about this crisis. Guterres stated:

“[W]e know lockdowns and quarantines are essential to suppressing COVID-19 but they can trap women with abusive partners. . . all governments to make the prevention and redress of violence against women a key part of their national response plan to COVID-19.”

While there are wonderful and noteworthy resources, hotlines and other support systems available to victims, we are currently enduring a time where these resources and access to them are more difficult.
